Neurodivergent Strategies for Overcoming Writer’s Block
Writer’s Block, Rewired: A live online workshop for neurodivergent writers
If you’ve ever sat in front of a blank page, completely stuck, while a voice in your head says “just push through it” or “build a daily habit” — and that advice has never once worked for you — you’re not alone, and you’re not doing it wrong.
Most writer’s block advice is built for neurotypical brains. For ADHD, autistic, and AuDHD writers, getting stuck isn’t usually about discipline at all. It can be nervous system overload, executive function friction, perfectionism freeze, demand avoidance, or your energy and the task simply not matching up. Sometimes it happens even when it’s a story you love and genuinely want to write.
This workshop is about working with your brain instead of against it.
What We’ll Actually Cover
We’ll start with a reframe: writer’s block isn’t a failure to write, it’s a signal. Your brain might be overwhelmed, under-stimulated, or unsure where to even begin, and the goal is to respond to that signal rather than fight it. We’ll do a quick body check-in too — a simple habit worth carrying into every writing session, not just this one.
From there, we’ll go a bit deeper into why different neurodivergent brains block in different ways — ADHD brains needing interest and novelty, autistic brains needing clarity and struggling with rigid transitions, AuDHD brains caught between craving structure and resisting it, and how trauma or sensory overload can show up as a freeze response too. We’ll also name how this actually plays out day to day: the procrastination spirals, the guilt that builds around not writing, abandoned projects, comparing yourself to neurotypical writers and their advice. Recognising your own pattern is most of the battle.
We’ll take a 15-minute break in the middle. No content, just a breather.
Then we move into the part most people come for: five practical, ND-friendly tools, with proper time to actually try each one rather than just hear about it. We’ll try several of these live, in short timed bursts, so you leave with a felt sense of what works for you — not just a list to forget about later.
Towards the end, we’ll pin down your own personal “block type,” match it to the tool that fits best, and spend real time building a short, realistic plan for what to do the next time you notice yourself stuck. We’ll close with a quick look back at how things have shifted since we started, and leave proper room for questions.
A Few Practical Things
It’s live on Zoom, and runs for about two and a half hours including the break. There’s no pressure to keep your camera on, and you’re welcome to stim, move around, speak up, or stay quiet throughout — whatever your brain and body need. We’ll do a few short writing bursts together during the session, but there’s no obligation to share anything you write.
Is This for You?
If you’re a neurodivergent writer who’s tired of being told to “just push through,” and you’d like some tools that actually fit how your brain works, I’d love to have you there. You’re not inconsistent, and you don’t lack discipline — your brain is interest-driven, and writing is allowed to feel lighter than this.
